Salvaleon de Higuey or, simply, Higuey, is a city
of the Dominican, capital Republic of the province of the
Altagracia.
Higuey is also the denomination of a chieftainship of
the East of the Island. This region conserves the name that
also occurs to its main city province the Altagracia. She
is one of the provinces with more registered economic development
of this country since it is the Capital of the Dominican and
capital Tourism of the Province the Altagracia, also denominated
Capital of the Cattle ranch. This city consists at the moment
with more than 150,000 inhabitants (2006). The city subsists
mainly thanks to the tourism, being many inhabitants occupied
in the hotel complexes of Punta Cana to few kilometers, or
in the tourist product commerce.
In the city the Cathedral or Basilica of Our Lady of the Altagracia is located.
According to some authors GUEY or HUIOU it is the sun
in taino. Between several South American tribes also it is
sun, light, day. It can be a simple coincidence but it is
to notice that Higüey is in the Eastern end of the island,
that is to say, in the region that first receives rays of
the sun. Of the name of Higuey it could there mean earth where
the sun is born.
